The first efforts to rebuild a damaged outboard
crankshaft revealed that this was a difficult, if not an impossible
task! They must be strong and hard enough to withstand the punishment
delivered by roller bearings under heavy loads and high Rpm's.
In recent years, a reliable process has been developed
to rebuild the surfaces on the outboard crankshaft. Journals are
restored to standard size & hardness (RC 58-63) by resizing, rebuilding
the journal with a special welding process, regrinding and heat
treating. They are then shot-peened to relieve stresses and magnaflux-inspected to ensure highest quality.
This is the answer to those overpriced OEM cranks!
The following table lists the readily available shafts and their
cost. IF you have something other than what is shown here, most
any crankshaft for older models can be repaired!
Cores value are as stated. Core value must be
determined upon receipt of the old shaft, and examination by the
rebuilder, so all shafts are sold outright subject to appraisal
of the core. The basic rebuildable shaft will have good splines,
and no more damaged journals than the number of cylinders of the
motor. Part numbers and applications are provided by crankshaft
rebuilder.
The crankshafts are listed by # of cylinders and/or horsepower. Also, listings include original equipment part numbers. Just select the correct # of cylinders, HP, year,
and before checkout, BE SURE
to fill out this little box with the MODEL & SERIAL #, as these
cranks vary as to year AND serial number series!
